5 Composers/1 Theme: A Filipino American Composition Project

Composers Nilo Alcala, Jem Talaroc, Melissa Orquiza, Nhick Ramiro Pacis, and Saunder Choi

An exciting video project featuring five Philippine composers is coming your way Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. PST (Sunday, Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Philippine Standard Time) on Facebook Live. FASO’s commissioned composers Jem Talaroc, Melissa Orquiza, Nhick Pacis, Nilo Alcala, and Saunder Choi, to each synthesize five iconic Philippine and American folk songs and themes. You may know a few of them:

  1. “Atin Cu Pung Singsing”

  2. “Bahay Kubo”

  3. “Leron, Leron Sinta”

  4. “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”

  5. “The Fa-So Theme” (Yes, we do have a theme song!)

These new works have been written for instruments commonly found in Western classical music as well as in Philippine folk music. Our premiere party on Facebook Live will feature each new work played by our very own orchestra members, along with commentary and reactions from our composers!

In addition, be on the lookout for new Artist Spotlight articles filled with fun facts about our five composers. We’d love for ya’ll to get to know them before the premiere.

Enjoy a sneak peek of the video project!
