Meet Our Solo Violinist, Irene Castillo

Irene Castillo will perform as a soloist in our upcoming CELEBRATION! Concert on Saturday, August 20, 2022. Here's a little bit about her:

Castillo is a senior at Indiana University pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance with Professor Mark Kaplan at the Jacobs School of Music. A recipient of the Premier Young Artist scholarship, she began violin lessons at age four with her mother, Agnes Miranda. Irene previously studied with Jasmine Lin of the Formosa Quartet. She has performed with the National Youth Orchestra of the USA at Carnegie Hall, the Tanglewood Music Festival and throughout Germany and Amsterdam.

She has been a student at the Merit School of Music and concertmaster of the Merit Philharmonic for five years. She is a multi awarded performer, chamber musician and orchestra member. In addition to her musical studies at IU, Irene is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and she is a research assistant at the Drosophila Genomics Resource Center at Indiana University. Irene performs on a one-hundred-year-old German violin from her late grandfather, UP Chemistry Professor Ben Miranda.
